NORTH VILLAGE BRANCH LIBRARY
New Construction
Austin, Texas

The North Village Branch Library is a new 11,000 sq. ft. building that serves five North Austin neighborhoods, doubling the size of the storefront branch it replaces. This library embraces a new vision for libraries in Austin.  It is designed to be a light filled community destination, where books, computers and people mingle.  It will feature age-appropriate places for children, teenagers and adults, as well as a community room for programs, clubs and life learning.  One notable feature is the “Living Room”, a light filled space where newspapers and magazines, overstuffed chairs and a coffee bar set the mood.

The North Village Branch Library is wired.  It has over 20 internet connected computers, and the building is entirely WiFi connected.  It also features networked self-service equipment for book check and personal account management.

The North Village Branch Library is "green".  It features a rainwater collection system and photovoltaic electric panels.  Its walls are built with an innovative structural block made of recycled wood chips.  And it is designed with a special focus on daylighting, where natural light animates a generous reading room.  The xeriscape landscape features native plants selected for their beauty and their drought tolerance.

This project was successfully brought to the end of the Design Development phase in a design review meeting held on June 20, 2006.  Grand Opening is anticipated for late September, 2008.
