HHSD ADMINISTRATIVE CAMPUS RENOVATION - PHASE 1
Renovation
Austin, Texas

The Health and Human Services Department recently purchased a 44 acre campus from the Texas School for the Deaf with the intention of consolidating their operations there.  This project began with an analysis of existing site resources and conditions and an evaluation of client program and budget information.  Based on this study, two ca. 1959 classroom buildings were converted into department headquarters.  The resulting design includes offices, conference rooms, copy centers, open office workstations and related functions.

From the outset, the client asked for a solution that was light-filled, spacious and clean.  To begin, the interiors were gutted, leaving only the structure and the building envelope.  The design required new mechanical systems, a new roof and all new interior partitions and finishes.

On this project, sustainability concerns led to making use of the existing buildings' perimeter windows and generous overhangs.  This resulted in a solution that optimizes available daylight while emphasizing a visual connection to the outdoors.
